From the Desk of Brian Wall

brianWhether we are news information consumers or not, I believe most of us have a sense that we are living in perilous times. Perils may be linked to terrorism, economic uncertainty, the pressure of moral decay upon us as Christ followers in our nation, or maybe personal challenges we are experiencing within our own families.

Regardless of peril’s source, God through the Psalmist has shared with us a wonderful promise found in Psalm 91:1-2,“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”

Faith Christian Benefit Gala

gala logo whiteThe Faith Promise Celebration has a new look!  For those of you who remember going downtown to the Convention Center, dressing up, and having a good meal there have been a few changes in the last several years.  Faith Promise was moved from the Convention Center to our west campus where we changed it up some and included silent and live auctions!  Faith Promise always has been successful in all of its forms.

In the past two years, there was another change to Faith Promise.  We still celebrate what God is doing at Faith Christian Academy and we still ask people to invest in education at Faith Christian.  However, the change divided one event into two:  “Faith Christian Benefit Gala” and “Faith Christian Academy Spring Celebration”.

Students Raise 7.25 Miles of Pennies

arvada food bank

October was Missions Month in the elementary school. Classes competed in collecting pennies, silver coins, dollars and even $100 bills. This year we collected over $6100.00, or about 7.25 miles of pennies!!! The Arvada Community Food Bank was chosen to be the recipient of our collections. They were very appreciative and excited to receive the donation!  Not only did our elementary students enjoy the competition between classes, but missions month is helping them learn about giving back to the community and those who are less fortunate.

Chromebooks Expand MS/HS Writing Skills

chromebooks girlsSixth grade teacher Heather Hicks says that the new Chromebooks have transformed aspects of her Language Arts class this year. Because not every student is equipped with a device entering middle school, the Chromebooks have enabled every student in 6th grade to have access to Faith's enhancing technology resources.

The Chromebooks have also empowered students to be responsible for more activities in the classroom, reducing the amount of homework, as well as the amount of paper used in class.

Biology Students Dig In & Get Dirty

HSgarden1FCHS students are testing out their green thumbs in the new experiential learning course, Biology 2: Introduction to Horticulture. The first of its kind at Faith, this class gives students hands-on learning as they cultivate plants a natural environment. Students have been diligently converting the grounds on the northeast side of the football field into a large garden - tilling the hard, rocky soil by hand and using large rocks from the soil as part of the landscape design. Senior Luke Inglee is building the fence and the raised beds for his Eagle Scout project, with many students in the class volunteering to help him.  It is amazing to see how God brings all the little details together for such a huge project.

Eagles Football Develops Three New Youth Teams

5th gr footballClose to 65 elementary boys are now competing on three teams in the Coal Creek Midget Football League as the Faith Eagles. It's been four years since FC Academy has had a middle school team because most of the students already played in leagues all over the city. Coal Creek allowed FC to create it's own team, where all our students could be on the same team, representing the Faith Eagles.

Biblical Integration in Calculus

biblical calculus1biblical calculus2biblical calculus3

Calculus is the mathematical study of change, dealing with finding properties of derivatives and integrals of functions. How do the Faith teachers relate this to the spiritual lives of their students? How does one fit all the pieces together? In a recent assignment, the FCHS calculus teacher had the students do just that.  Here are some excerpts from their writings . . .

Returning to Faith

Jonathan Lowry, English Teacher, High School

jonathanlowryBeing a new teacher is like being the new kid on the block. Being a new teacher who has only been out of high school for a couple years is like being the new kid on the block AND fresh meat. But being the new teacher, only out of high school a little while, and being an alumnus of the school you work at is a whole new ball game. I love being in a place that has welcomed me with open arms, even though the rookie jokes abound. I welcome it all.

This is why I knew I wanted to work at Faith Christian Academy

HS Staff Spotlight: John Lodwick

john lodwick 1Get to know new Faith faculty and staff through their own words of introduction.

John Lodwick, Bible Teacher, High School

I was a Senior Pastor at Eastmont Church in Bend, Oregon for thirty years and enjoyed it thoroughly.  My wife's name is Judy and we’ve been happily married for over thirty-five years. We have three grown children and two granddaughters, ages three and one, who live in Denver.

I am growing spiritually through the challenges of being a first year teacher as well as having the privilege of teaching Bible - for freshmen as well as for seniors.  The mission of Faith Christian drew me to apply for a teaching and coaching position. Judy and I believed the Lord wanted us to move to Denver from Oregon to be more accessible to family.  I would like to be the most effective Bible teacher and coach (cross country and basketball) I can be; this behind being the best husband, dad, granddad, son, brother and in-law I can be for my family, as I seek the Lord and endeavor to honor Him.

HS Staff Spotlight: Courtney Waters

Courtney Waters, English Teacher, High School

I graduated from Metropolitan State University in 1999 with a degree in English, Secondary Education. My husband, a former FCHS teacher, proposed to me during a HS chapel in the spring of 1999, we were married in December 2000, and have three children between the ages of seven and eleven.

Truly, by His grace and love, He continues to woo me along the path of wholeness and healing. Though not always an easy path, I'm thankful for His patience and gentleness as He draws me ever-increasingly toward the center of His heart. Just spending time with Him is how I "grow." My dream is to continue to experience more and more deeply and truly His love for me, so that I may continue to pour out that same love to whomever He brings across my path.

MS Staff Spotlight: Katie Krepel

Katie Krepel, Math Teacher, Middle School

I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and certification in middle level mathematics. After graduation, I accepted a position to teach 7th grade math in Cushing, OK. While looking for change, God used my sister who lives nearby to mention what a great school Faith is. While she had no personal experience with the school, she had heard of its good reputation. Miraculously, Faith was looking to hire a 7th grade math teacher, so thanks be to God, here I am! I hope to continue developing my skills as a teacher, eventually pursuing a master’s degree in education.

I also hope to continue developing my faith in Jesus Christ. “Faith comes from hearing the Word,” so in an effort to strengthen my walk with Jesus Christ, I read my Bible daily, attend church regularly, and participate in a weekly Bible study with my peers. Additionally, I discuss theological and Biblical questions with my father and my brother, who is also a Lutheran minister.

MS Staff Spotlight: Randy McNeal

Randy McNeal, Bible Teacher, Middle School

I was raised in the church all my life; my parents still attend that church. I met my wife at George Fox University where we both attended. We now have a house in Arvada with the most adorable Labradoodle, Sophie, that you’ve ever met.

Professionally I have worked in youth ministry for over a decade always with a focus on middle school. I have worked at camps, churches, teen centers, and volunteered in schools. In addition to my work with young people, I am also a very good barista! I started subbing at Faith last year to prepare myself for a career as college Bible professor. That experience made me realize that I would much rather work with middle school than college age students. My dreams for the future are to continue my education, and once I finish my Masters of Theology, I would like to pursue a PhD as well. Eventually I would like to write a book to help people understand why there is so much joy in working with middle school-age students.

ES Staff Spotlight: Jill Pierce

teacher jill pierceGet to know new Faith faculty and staff through their own words of introduction.

Jill Pierce, Second Grade Teacher, Elementary School

My family and I moved to Colorado in July of 2015.  We came to Colorado from Orlando, Florida to help plant a church: Storyline Fellowship.  My husband is the worship pastor, and I serve on the hospitality team.  My two child attend Faith and are enjoying 4th and 7th grades.  I graduated from University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education.  This is my 18th year to teach; I've previously taught in elementary schools in Florida.

I am learning that when God wants you somewhere, he will get you there and the pieces will fall into place.  His plan and timing are perfect.  I am excited to see God grow our church through building relationships throughout Arvada.  I am also excited about being a part of the Faith community, which is already becoming family.
